First cooked up In 1918 by French inventor Louis Octave Fauchon-Villeplee then revived in WWII : "The Sequel" by the badguys. Although never build by them it sure did make the goodguys /drool and go to work to see if the theory was feasible then finally by the 70's as part of the “star wars” Strategic Defence Initiative;
railguns use magnetic fields to propel a conductive projectile like a metal rod, to incredible speeds.
They have been used in gaming for at least a decade and continue to see constant use taking on many forms in games like:
|
making ppl ragequit since 1997 |
Crysis , Red Faction, Quake and Metal gear Solid.
Lets not forget sexually wielded by none other than gods avatar Arnold Schwarzenegger in Eraser. /fistpump

200% Justice |
Well dream no more... The Americans successfully fired off their first one and have plans to have the tech Incorporated into the Navy by 2020. Charles Garnett the project director said that "the rail gun will be able to take out a building by the time it is put into service". It was 8 MJ (megajoules or Michael Jackson's) rail gun firing 3.2 kg projectiles in October 2006 as a prototype of a 64 MJ weapon to be deployed aboard Navy warships. Since then BAE have delivered a 32 MJ prototype to Team America World Police and currently hold the world record for a 33MJ shot.

ReplyDeleteAhh i remember these days
ReplyDeleteWhen I took AP Physics C last year my teacher described a student from a few years before me "who couldn't pass one of [his] tests but had a great engineering mind."
ReplyDeleteApparently the student brought in all of the necessary supplies (including fuel) and built a prototype rail gun. Obviously not military grade but it fired a projectile based on the concept of a rail gun.

ReplyDeleteCool, waiting to 2020 to see no buildings!
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming this will be a mounted weapon. The kick on this thing would kill a person. Imagine the recoil. I wonder how they've damped that down?
